Language-supportive guidance during training
This course (Competence Package 1) is aimed at training supervisors, advisors, and education coordinators who work with social and healthcare students with Danish as a second language.
The goal is to provide participants with knowledge and tools to support and guide the students in various language situations in their daily work – so the students better understand instructions, learn the professional language of their field, and become confident in their communication at the workplace.
Course participants will gain knowledge about:
- What it means to have Danish as a second language
- How students acquire language during training
- How to best guide multilingual students – e.g. through group guidance and learning agreements
- How to avoid misunderstandings in communication
Course participants will be equipped to:
- Support students in daily language situations such as instructions, documentation, and transferring observations
- Introduce strategies and tools that strengthen the students’ language development
Goal:
To strengthen supervisors’ ability to support social and healthcare students with Danish as a second language in their linguistic and professional development in everyday situations.
Duration:
1–1.5 days – start date by agreement.
Language support for SOSU students in training
Many SOSU students with Danish as a second language have the necessary professional qualifications but face language challenges during their training periods. This can impact their learning, well-being, and citizen safety.
Therefore, we offer targeted language support (Competence Package 2) that strengthens students’ ability to communicate with citizens, colleagues, and supervisors – helping them maintain motivation and complete their education.
Contents of the competence package:
- Language screening of individual students and recommendations for further action
- Weekly language support at the training site by instructors with experience in Danish as a second language
- Support in developing strategies for language acquisition in practice
- Collaboration with training supervisors to integrate language support into daily routines
- Intensive language support twice a week for 2 hours during training periods 1, 1a, and 1b
- Flexible 10-hour packages focusing on the student’s current needs
Goal:
To support SOSU students with Danish as a second language in their linguistic development, so they can communicate more effectively in practice, thrive in training, and complete their education.
Recruitment of SOSU students
Many SOSU students have the formal qualifications but not always the necessary language level to complete a vocational education.
Therefore, we offer a course (Competence Package 3) that equips education consultants to assess applicants’ language competencies – and make well-founded recruitment decisions.
The course provides tools to:
- Assess whether an applicant has the necessary language level to manage school and training periods
- Use interview guides during job interviews
- Provide constructive feedback when declining applicants
- Understand what it means to have Danish as a second language
- Communicate more clearly and supportively with students who have Danish as a second language
Goal:
To ensure that SOSU students are recruited at the right stage of their language development – giving them the best chance to complete their education.
Duration: 1 day – start date by agreement.
Language-supportive transitions between SOSU school and training
This competence package (Competence Package A) is aimed at instructors, advisors, and literacy coaches at SOSU schools and focuses on how to best support the linguistic development of multilingual students – both during school periods and training.
Many SOSU students with Danish as a second language experience significant differences between school and training. This course provides concrete methods for creating a seamless experience for SOSU students throughout their education.
Participants in the course will gain knowledge about:
- What it means to have Danish as a second language
- How to support students in learning and retaining new words
- How to create cohesion between school and training
Participants will be equipped to:
- Support students in their professional and linguistic development
- Work specifically with professional social and healthcare language
- Use concrete tools and strategies in teaching
Goal:
To strengthen instructors’ and advisors’ ability to create continuity in language support across school and training – so multilingual SOSU students can better acquire and apply the professional language throughout their education.
