Rules for Danish education

For whom?

Danish language education is a free programme for newly arrived foreigners who are at least 18 years old and have:

  • A residence permit or permanent, legal residence in Denmark and a registered address in a municipality.

or

  • Permanent residence under EU rules and residence in a municipality.

Also for EU cross-border commuters who work or have a business in Denmark but permanent residence outside the country’s borders.

It is your municipality of residence that refers you to Danish Language Training.

You are generally entitled to Danish Language Training for a maximum of 5 years from your arrival in Denmark.

You will be offered the opportunity to participate in one Danish language programme. This means you can participate in Danish Language Education 1, 2 or 3. When you have completed the Danish language programme you are placed on, you are finished.

S student or I student

In the Danish Language Education legislation, a distinction is made between S-course students and I-course students.

You are an S-course student if you are in Denmark, for example;

  • to work or study
  • as an accompanying spouse
  • as a family reunification under EU rules
  • as an au pair

You are an I-course student if you are in Denmark as a refugee or family reunification under the Danish Aliens Act.

Deposit for S students

When you are referred to Danish Language Education, the lessons are free of charge.

However, if you are an S-course student, you must pay a deposit of DKK 2.000,- before you can start. You can get your deposit refunded – or transferred to the next module – if you complete the module within the deadline.

If you do not complete the module within the deadline, you will lose your deposit and will have to pay a new deposit if you wish to continue to the next module.
