FVU Danish

In FVU Start, you’ll practice oral Danish to improve your ability to speak and understand Danish. You’ll increase your vocabulary, become better at using the right expressions in conversations and understand what others are saying to you.

The course prepares you for FVU Levels, where the primary focus is to improve your reading and writing skills in Danish.

You can start FVU Start once you have passed;

• Danish Language Education 1 module 5
• Danish Language Education 2 module 4
• Danish Language Education 3 module 3

Or being tested to an equivalent level.

We also offer FVU Healthcare Danish at Start level, which is customised for those with a health professional education.

We practice grammar and spelling rules.

We work on the relationship between sound and writing to make it easier for you to hear how words are spelled. We work on reading techniques to help you understand what you read. In writing, we work on writing texts that you need in your everyday life, such as emails.

You can start FVU Danish level 1 when you;

• have passed FVU Start
• have passed Danish Language Education 2 module 5
• have passed Danish Language Education 3 module 4

Or is being tested to an equivalent level.

Learn to read faster and more confidently.

You’ll learn grammar and work with word classes such as nouns, verbs and adjectives. You’ll also learn how to conjugate words.

In writing, we work on writing texts that you need in your everyday life. You’ll learn how to write instructions and less coherent texts.

You can start FVU Danish level 2 when you;

• have passed FVU level 1
• have passed Danish Language Education 2 module 5
• have passed Danish Language Education 3 module 4

Or is being tested to an equivalent level.

We work with grammar and text types. You’ll learn how to spell difficult words and recognise different text types.

You’ll learn to distinguish between different types of texts and learn more reading strategies to help you read faster.

In writing, we work on writing texts in different genres and how to construct sentences, and we do exercises where you write about the same topic in different ways.

You can start FVU Danish level 3 when you;

• have passed FVU level 2
• have passed Danish Language Education 2 module 5
• have passed Danish Language Education 3 module 4

Or is being tested to an equivalent level.

Here we read academic and professional texts that prepare you for jobs or education. You’ll learn how to read non-fiction books, and you’ll prepare a longer written assignment, among other things.

You’ll expand your vocabulary by working with vocabulary specific to your field of work and we focus on correct spelling – including foreign words.

You will read technical texts that are relevant to your programme, and you will learn to write texts with technical content and use figures and tables in your assignments. We also work on creating coherence in the texts you write.

You can start FVU Danish level 4 when you;

• have passed FVU level 3
• have passed Danish Language Education 2 module 5
• have passed Danish Language Education 3 module 4

Or is being tested to an equivalent level.

FVU stands for preparatory adult education.

FVU Danish and Maths are free courses designed to improve your Danish language or mathematical skills in your everyday life, education or job. An FVU course can also strengthen your chances of gaining employment.

FVU is aimed at both foreigners and Danish citizens. FVU teaching is primarily focused on reading and writing. In FVU Start, we mostly work with oral skills and vocabulary.

The FVU courses are divided into steps/levels of 40-60 lessons. Each level can be completed with an official test. FVU Start is completed with an internal evaluation.

FVU Danish level 4 corresponds to the 9th grade final exam in Danish. You can use a level 4 Danish test to apply for Danish citizenship. You can use a level 2 or 3 Danish test to apply for a permanent residence permit. Read more about the level tests here.

FVU is a programme that typically targets people with a shorter education or people who have limited Danish and therefore want to improve their Danish language skills. Through an FVU Danish course, you will strengthen your language skills, primarily your reading and writing skills. This can help you perform better in the Danish labour market.

The language lessons take place once a week, typically lasting 2.5 hours, in groups of between 12 and 18 students. You can attend FVU in Hellerup, Frederiksberg, Lyngby or online.

To start an FVU course, you must have a reasonable level of Danish (see admission requirements under the different levels further up the page)

FVU cannot replace the Danish Language Programme. However, it can be a good supplement to Danish Language Education or as a follow-up course.
