Danish Citizenship Test

The Citizenship Test is a written multiple-choice test that you must pass in order to obtain Danish citizenship. The test lasts 45 minutes and consists of a total of 45 questions, primarily about Danish society, culture, and history. To pass the test, you must answer at least 36 questions correctly, including at least 4 out of the 5 questions on Danish values

 

The 45 questions consist of;

  • 35 questions about Danish history, society, and culture.
  • 5 questions about current issues and events in Danish society.
  • 5 questions about Danish values.

 

You are not allowed to use any aids during the exam. This means you may not use dictionaries, notes, a computer, a mobile phone, or any other tools during the exam.

 

The Ministry of Immigration and Integration is responsible for the Citizenship Test.

Dates and prices

The citizenship test is held twice a year throughout Denmark.

Time: 13.00 – 13.45 (meeting time: 12.00)

Price: DKK 946,-

Registration deadline: 29 April

 

Citizenship test 25 November, 2026

Time: 13.00 – 13.45 (meeting time: 12.00)

Registration deadline: 21 October

 

NB: Unfortunately, we do not accept registrations after the deadline.

Identification requirements

It is important that you bring the correct identification with you to the Citizenship Test.

You can read below what constitutes valid identification:

  • Residence card, alien’s passport or convention passport issued by a public authority in Denmark.
  • Passport or identity card issued by a public authority in another EU/EEA member state or in Switzerland.
  • Passport issued by a public authority in a country other than those listed above, with a residence sticker attached.

Check well in advance of the test that you have the correct identification. A photocopy or image of the document cannot be used.

The practicalities

You can choose to enrol for the Citizenship Test in;

  • Frederiksberg
  • Helsingør

You will be notified of the exact meeting place no later than 2 weeks before the test is held.

If you pass the test, you will receive your test certificate in your e-Boks no later than 2 weeks after the test.

You can also pick up the original test certificate at Speak Hellerup up to 1 year after you have passed the test.

Preparation for the Citizenship Test

Good preparation can make a big difference when you take the Citizenship Test, and there are many things you can do yourself to improve your chances and feel more confident on the day of the exam.

 

First and foremost, you should read the free learning material on Danish history, democracy, economy and more. The material is also available in an audio version. Knowledge of the content of the study material is an important prerequisite for passing the test. In addition, you should keep yourself informed about current news in Denmark.

 

Part of good preparation can also be to review previous tests. It gives you an idea of what the questions look like, which topics often appear, and the level of difficulty.

 

The Citizenship Test consists of 45 questions. 35 of the questions are based on the study material. The last 10 questions are unprepared, 5 of the questions are of a topical nature and 5 of the questions deal with Danish values.

You need at least 36 correct answers to pass the test and you must answer at least 4 of the questions about Danish values correctly.

Questions & Answers

When is the Citizenship Test held?

  • The Citizenship Test is held twice a year – typically in June and at the end of November or the beginning of December. The registration deadline is usually 5–6 weeks beforehand, so it’s important to register well in advance. The exact dates are announced by the Ministry of Immigration and Integration. How much does it cost to take the Citizenship Test?

  • There is a fee to participate in the Citizenship Test. The price is set by the state and is adjusted from year to year. You pay the fee when you register. You can find the fee further up on the page.

Where can you take the Citizenship Test in Copenhagen?

  • The Citizenship Test is held at language centers across the country, including Copenhagen and the surrounding area. You can choose where you want to register. You can register at Speak further up on the page.

How many pass the Citizenship Test?

  • The pass rate for the Citizenship Test varies from time to time. Normally, a little over half of the participants pass, but it depends on how well you are prepared – especially for the 10 current affairs and values questions, which can be challenging. With the right preparation, you can significantly increase your chances of passing the test on your first attempt. You can download the learning materials for free further up on the page.

What if I don’t pass the Citizenship Test?

  • You can take the Citizenship Test as many times as you want. If you don’t pass the Test, you can register again next semester. This gives you time and the opportunity to prepare better and review the material again.
