The Active Citizen Exam

The Active Citizen Exam is a written multiple choice test about Danish democracy, everyday life, culture and history. It consists of a total of 25 questions.

 

You can use the The Active Citizen Exam if you are applying for a permanent residence permit in Denmark.

 

The Ministry of Immigration and Integration is responsible for The Active Citizen Exam.

The Active Citizen Exam May 27, 2025

Time: 11:00 – 11:30

Price: DKK 905,-

Registration deadline: April 22 , 2025

 

The Active Citizen Exam 26 November, 2025

Time: 11:00 – 11:30

Price: DKK 905,-

Registration deadline: October 22 , 2025

 

NB: Unfortunately, we do not accept registrations after the deadline.

Identification requirements

It is important that you bring the correct identification to the Active Citizen Exam.

You can read below what constitutes valid identification:

  • Residence card, alien’s passport or convention passport issued by a public authority in Denmark
  • Passport or identity card issued by a public authority in another EU/EEA member state or in
    Switzerland
  • Passport issued by a public authority in a country other than those listed above and which has a
    residence sticker.

Check well in advance of the exam that you have the correct identification. A photocopy or image of the document cannot be used.

The practicalities

You can choose to enrol for the Active Citizen Exam in;

  • Frederiksberg
  • Elsinore

You will be notified of the exact meeting place no later than 2 weeks before the exam is held.

If you pass the exam, you will receive your exam certificate in your e-Boks no later than 2 weeks after the test.

You can also pick up the original exam certificate at Speak Hellerup up to one year after you have passed the exam.

Preparation for the Active Citizen Exam

The Active Citizen Exam consists of 25 questions. You need to get at least 20 correct to pass.

The questions are based on the learning materials that you can download for free here.

The materials is also available in an audio version and you can also see examples of previous tests.

If you do not pass

If you don’t pass the Active Citizen Exam, you can register for the exam again next semester. This gives you the time and opportunity to prepare better and study the material again.
